How is Laser Used in Dentistry?

Dentistry involves the study, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of conditions associated with oral cavity and adjacent areas. The introduction of laser technologies in dentistry offers many benefits. Several lasers are used these days which help in performing complex dental procedures. However, the devices used for application in dentistry are to be approved by the American Dental Association. They are used for various procedures in dentistry and some of them are mentioned here.

Teeth Whitening
Stained or discolored teeth can be whitened by laser treatment. A whitening solution is applied on to the surface of teeth. A laser light is exposed on the surface of teeth. It enhances the process of whitening by activating the agents to penetrate the teeth surface.

Tooth Decay
Tooth decay can be removed by using laser. Curing or hardening a filling can also be done by using lasers.

Gum Alterations
Reshaping the gums and removing the bacteria during root canal treatments can be made easy by using lasers. Teeth lengthening for people having short teeth is done by lasers where the excess gum tissue is removed without any pain.

Cavity Detection
Any problems associated with hard and soft cavities can be detected at earlier stages by laser dentistry. Such early detection can help you to solve them in advance.

Tissue Regeneration
Dental lasers can be used for removing unnecessary tissues and also to enhance the growth of new tissues. Certain light frequencies are applied for stimulating the growth of nerves and blood vessels. This process is called as photo-biomodulation. People having lost dental structures because of accidents, aging or illness can benefit a lot by laser tissue regeneration.

In addition to these, lasers can also be used for treating certain joint disorders. Thus, lasers can be used for various purposes in dentistry.
